課程概述

This course provides a holistic approach to the translation practice. We will focus on practical training in translation from English to Chinese. This practical training will be informed by relevant theories and useful skills and knowledge in translation practice that are essential for novice translators. Students are encouraged to think critically and analytically about different issues and difficulties arising in the translation process, envisage their individual role as a translator, and develop their decision-making ability to deal with potential translation problems and come up with solutions. While facilitated by lecturer-guidance and comment, this course is highly student-centred which requires students’ proactive participation in their learning process through various in-class activities, including self-critique, peer-review and oral presentations.

課程目標
The main objective of this course is to involve students in their own learning and to assist students in becoming familiar with translation practice. The course foci will firstly be on developing students’ ability in dealing with the fundamental issues in translating between Chinese and English. Subsequently, the course aims to emphasize the role of students as translators and the development of their “translator’s competence” in dealing with the actual translation. Here, translator’s competence such as bi-lingual and bi-cultural knowledge, internet-search and research skills through paralleled texts, and translation problem-solving skills will be as important as the discussion of the translator’s awareness of important translation issues like translation function, text analysis, translation brief and translation strategy, etc. Students must understand that the translation rendered should be a final product that is the result of careful thought and thorough discussion.
課程要求
Requirements - students MUST:

Complete and submit the weekly or fortnightly assignments (translation; self-revision and commentary) for the purpose of peer review and in-class discussion at least THREE days before class (see instructions in class)
Understand that any unjustified absence and late submission of assignments for up to two times will result into a ZERO of the entire assessment
Not submit any overdue coursework/assignments without any prior discussion/negotiation with the course coordinator; in general, an extension will only be granted for serious circumstances that require compassionate consideration, such as sudden serious illness, loss of family or a car accident

Be proactively participating in their own learning process, both in and after class, including (in-class) translation practice, self-critic, peer-review as well as mini presentation on a regular basis
Be able to work individually on and responsible for their coursework, including paying attention to details when writing assignments and punctual submission of any types, either through e-mail or in hard-copy
Be good team players when pair/teamwork is required
Use NTU e-mail as the channel of the first point of contact
